About Salah Arabians

Dorothy's love of horses began at an early age when she was taken to the thoroughbred races by her parents, Everlyn & Albert Mullens. Her lifelong passion for the Arabian horses began when they purchased the three year old purebred filly El Salah (Sala Imp UK x Moonoura)(In Photos) for her when she was thirteen years old, in 1963.

"Sally" as she was affectionately known, proved the versatility of the breed, being successfully shown for many years in a variety of events including ridden Galloway & Arabian, led classes including led Arabian, open Galloway and polo pony (in which she was seldom defeated). El Salah produced El Takara, the dam of the successful show and breeding stallion Ya' Bub.

Dorothy bred and showed crabbet-line horses and later married Don Hodge. Although not a horse person Don has supported her in showing and breeding.
They moved to Bunyip where they still reside with Arabians, thoroughbred racehorses, numerous cats and other assorted pets.
Their son Shaun was born in 1974 and when he was old enough took over showing the Salah Horses.

After seeing a photo of Ansata Ibn Halima arriving in the USA, Dorothy's life-long love affair with the Egyptian Arabians began. They purchased the 7/8th Egyptian - related colt Arabesque El Saad at 1 week old from Lesley Dowey's Arabesque Stud.

Saad was by Hansan Imp USA (by El Hilal) and out of El Sherif Kasmina. he proved to be a superior producer and sired a string of wonderful show horses, including  Australian Champion Filly Salah El Saadonay, Victorian Arabian Classic Supreme Junior Champion Salah El Saadiqa, East Coast Top 5 and Australian Top 10 Mare Nantilla Saadisha and East Coast Top 5 & UAE Presidents Cup Endurance Winner Salah El Saadran.
He left Salah a sound breeding legacy of mares, which proved a wonderful nick with Monteego Bay (Imp USA)

In 1993 Dorothy, Don, Shaun and good friend Maureen Close travelled to the United States in search of a straight Egyptian colt. After extensive research and years of admiring the St. Clairs horses, Dorothy decided that the El Mareekh (Egypt) lines had what she needed.

They visited the St. Clair's in Wisconsin,US where they looked at several colts, but when presented with Monteego Bay (Anaza Bey Shah x Monietta Mareekha) she fell instantly in love with him.
Dorothy said the first sight of him gave her 'Goosebumps all over' and the only other horse to do that was the legendary Ansata Ibn Halima!!!

Monteego Bay was subsequently purchased and imported to Australia. he has proven to be one of Australia's top sires, a prepotent producer over varying bloodlines, giving his foals that 'Monteego look'- beautiful faces, arched well - set necks, super smooth top lines and lots of snort and trot!

His progeny speak for themselves and he is one of the few breeding stallions whose sons are also superior producers, a sire of sires and his daughters equally so.

Monteego Bay (Imp USA) himself was one of Australia's top show horses, being East Coast Res Champion Stallion (to Simeon Sadik) and Top 5 twice and Australian National Res. Champion stallion. Some of his progeny include, Australian Res. Champion Filly Salah Saona, East Coast Champion and Victorian Championship Supreme Champion Gelding Salah San Juan, Australian Championships Top 10 Colt and Top 10 Stallion Salah Key Largo.

After many years of breeding and showing Egyptian related horses has commenced a straight Egyptian program, with three mares due to foal to Monteego Bay Imp USA in 2010.
